Same-sex marriages were legalized in Canada. Canada was the third country in the world to pass such a law.
2004 
Sovereign power was handed to the interim government of Iraq by the Coalition Provisional Authority, ending the US-led rule.
2001 
Former Yugoslav president, Slobodan Milosevic, was handed over by Serbia to the United nations war crimes tribunal.
1997 
Boxer, Mike Tyson, was disqualified after biting fellow boxer, Evander Holyfield's, ear during their WBA heavyweight title fight.
1966 
American actor, John Cusack, was born in Evanston, Illinois. Despite being one of the highly sought out actors in Hollywood, he often chooses roles in movies outside the mainstream.
1960 
Cuba nationalized the US owned oil refineries in its territories.
1950 
North Korean troops captured the city of Seoul. The city was liberated by United nations troops a couple of months later, but was subsequently recaptured in January 1951 by Chinese and North Korean forces. On March 1951 the city was recaptured, for the final time, by United Nations troops.
1948 
American actress, Kathy Bates, was born in Memphis, Tennessee. Considered as on of the best actresses of her generation, she is best known for her role as Annie Wilkes in the 1990 film Misery.
1932 
American actor, Pat Morita, was born in Isleton, California. He is most known for his role as Mr. Miyagi in the movie The Karate Kid, for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1984.
1926 
American filmmaker, Mel Brooks, was born in Brooklyn, New York. He is best known as a creator of comedy parodies, such as Blazing Saddles, History of the World and Young Frankenstein.
1919 
The Treaty of Versailles was signed in Paris, effectively marking the end of World War I between Britain, France, Italy, the United States and allies on the one side and Germany and Austria-Hungary on the other side.
1914 
Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria and his wife Sophia were assassinated in the city of Sarajevo. It is considered the starting point of World war I.
1577 
Belgian painter, Peter Paul Rubens, was born in Siegen, Westphalia. He was probably the most popular European painter of the 17th century.
