	January 5th	Italian writer, Umberto Eco, was born in Alessandria, Italy. He is best known for his bestselling novel The Name of the Rose.
	February 4th	The 3rd Winter Olympic Games opened in Lake Placid, New York.
	February 26th	American musician, Johnny Cash, was born in Arkansas. He was one of the pioneers of rock 'n' roll music and is considered as one of the most important musicians in the history of American pop music.
	February 27th	British actress, Elizabeth Taylor, was born in London. She was one of the greatest film stars of the 20th century and was considered one of the most beautiful women in the world.
	March 14th	American inventor, George Eastman, died at the age of 77. He was the inventor of the roll film and the founder of the Eastman Kodak Corporation.
	March 18th	American writer, John Updike, was born in Shillington, Pennsylvania. He is one of the most critically acclaimed writers of the later part of the 20th and early 21st centuries.
	April 4th	American actor, Anthony Perkins, was born. Famous for his part as Norman, in the thriller, Psycho.
	April 10th	Egyptian actor, Omar Sharif, was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He became famous for his starring role in the 1965 film Dr. Zhivago.
	April 28th	The vaccine for yellow fever was discovered.
	May 4th	Mobster Al Capone was incarcerated in Atlanta, Georgia after having been sentenced to eleven years in prison for tax evasion.
	June 28th	American actor, Pat Morita, was born in Isleton, California. He is most known for his role as Mr. Miyagi in the movie The Karate Kid, for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1984.
	July 9th	American politician, Donald Rumsfeld, was born in Chicago, Illinois. He served as Secretary of Defence of the United states from 1975 to 1977 and again from 2001 to 2006. He most remembered for having been the US Secretary of Defence during the US led invasion of Iraq and his subsequent resignation on November 1, 2006.
	August 2nd	Irish actor, Peter O'Toole, was born in Leeds, England. He is best known for his performances in such classic films as Lawrence of Arabia and The Lion in winter.
	August 7th	Ethiopian athlete, Abebe Bikila, was born in the village of Jato. He was a two-time Olympic marathon champion. He won his first gold in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome where he became famous for running barefoot.
	October 3rd	Iraq gained its independence from Britain.
	October 19th	American actor, Robert Reed, was born in Illinois. He studied Shakespeare in college and it is said that he was unhappy with his role in the hit sitcom, The Brady Bunch, which made him famous.
	November 7th	The first episode of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was aired on the radio. The radio show lasted for a full 15 years before it was cancelled. The show also spawned a multitude of movies as well as television and animated series.
	November 10th	American actor, Roy Scheider, was born in New Jersey.
	November 22nd	American actor, Robert Vaughn, was born in New York City.
	December 10th	Thailand became a constitutional monarchy and is officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand.
