77-year old John Glenn becomes the oldest person to go into space aboard the space shuttle Discovery. He was also the first American to orbit Earth on February 20, 1962.
1988 
The Sega Megadrive gaming console was released for the first time. It was known as Sega Genesis in many countries and was the last entertainment system by SEGA that was a commercial success.
1971 
American actress, Winona Ryder, was born in Minnesota. In November of 2002, she was found guilty of shoplifting after stealing items worth several thousand dollars from the Saks Fifth Avenue department store in Beverly Hills, California.

Dutch footballer, Edwin van der Sar, was born in Voorhout, Netherlands. He is widely considered as one of the best goalkeepers of all time.

Dutch footballer, Philip Cocu, was born in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
1969 
The first-ever link between two computers was established on the ARPANET, the predecessor of the modern day Internet.
1960 
Muhammad Ali (then still known as Cassius Clay) won his first professional fight in Louisville, Kentucky.

Israeli armed forces invaded the Sinai Peninsula and forced the Egyptian army to retreat to the Suez Canal.

American actor, Richard Dreyfuss, was born in New York.
1923 
Turkey was proclaimed as a republic after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire.
1911 
Hungarian-born newspaper publisher, Joseph Pulitzer, was born in Mako, Hungary. He emigrated to the United States during the period of the American Civil War and eventually built a publishing empire. His legacy is still alive today through the prestigious Pulitzer Awards.

First ever performance of Mozart's opera, Don Giovanni, took place in Prague.
