Charles Manson along with 3 members of his cult were found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

A military coup in Uganda deposed, then president, Milton Obote and installed Idi Amin as president. Idi Amin was deposed in 1979 and is considered to have been one of the most brutal dictators of the 20th century.

The Nasdaq stock market index was established. It stands for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations.

The Seabed Treaty was signed. According to the terms of the treaty, the placing of nuclear weapons in international waters was outlawed.

American businessman, James C. Penney, died at the age of 95. He was the founder of the J.C. Penney company, which currently (2006) operates more than 1000 department stores in the United States.

American actress, Denise Richards, was born in Illinois. She gained fame after her participation in the hit movie, Wild Things, which helped establish her as a young actress. She is also known for her short lived marriage to fellow actor, Charlie Sheen.

American boxer, Joe Frazier, defeated Muhammad Ali in the first of a three bout series. It was Muhammad Ali's first ever defeat.

American actor, Harold Lloyd, died at the age of 77. Along with Charlie Chaplin he is considered as one of the most influential and popular comedians of the silent films era.

A massive landslide at Chungar, Peru cost the lives of more than 200 people.

Bangladesh proclaimed its independence.

Scottish formula one driver, David Coulthard, was born in Scotland.

Filming of the cult movie "The Godfather" began under the direction of Francis Ford Coppola. The movie was released in theatres a year later.

Lt. William Calley is convicted for the murder of 109 people in the village of My Lai, Vietnam, and sentenced to life in prison. He served a total of three and a half years before being released.

The Unites states National Railroad passenger corporation, Amtrak, was created. While an autonomous business entity, all of its preferred stock is owned by the US government and members of its board of directors are appointed by the President of the United States.

Ajax FC defeated Panathinaikos FC in the final of the European football championship cup.

The entire crew of the Soviet Soyuz 11 spacecraft was killed when the air supply escaped the spacecraft due to a faulty valve.

American singer, Jim Morrison, was found dead in his bathtub at the age of 27. He was the lead singer of the music band 'The Doors'.

American musician, Louis Armstrong, died at the age of 69. He was one of the most influential jazz singers of all time.

8th
British troops opened fire and killed 2 protesters in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Despite public outrage over the killings, the British government refused to hold an inquiry regarding the shootings. The event itself as well as the position of the British government sparked one of the most violent series of clashes ever to occur in Northern Ireland.

10th
Irish footballer, Roy Keane, was born in Cork. He is widely considered as the greatest Irish born footballer player of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

American tennis player, Pete Sampras, was born in Washington, DC. He is generally considered to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time.

15th
Bahrain declared its independence. It had been under British governorship until the 1960's and was protected under the charter of the United Nations until its declaration of independence. UN protection became necessary because Iran had laid claim to the island.
September
4th
An Alaska Airlines passenger flight crashed into a mountain near Juneau, Alaska. All 111 people on board died in the crash.

20th
Greek writer, Giorgos Seferis, died at the age of 71. He was the Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1963 and was the first Greek to ever receive a Nobel Prize, until 1979 when Odysseas Elytis also won the same award. Seferis is credited as being the most influential figure of 20th century Greek language and largely responsible for the rebirth of Greek literature.

Walt Disney World opened its door in Orlando, Florida, United States. The original, Disneyland, in California, was opened in 1955.

American rapper, Snoop Dogg, was born in Long Beach, California. He is one of producer's Dr. Dre's most notable protezes.

The United Nations accepted the People's Republic of China and expelled the Republic of China as the representative of the country of China.

The Democratic Republic of Congo was renamed to Zaire.

American actress, Winona Ryder, was born in Minnesota. In November of 2002, she was found guilty of shoplifting after stealing items worth several thousand dollars from the Saks Fifth Avenue department store in Beverly Hills, California.

Computer company Intel released the first commercial single-chip micro-processor.

A hijacker under the alias Dan Cooper parachuted from a passenger plane over Washington, USA, after he had collected 200,000 USD in ransom. He was never apprehended.

The United Arab Emirates were formed when Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Fujairah, Sharjah, Dubai, and Umm Al Quwain merged into one country.
