The last issue of The Saturday Evening Post magazine was published. It was first printed in 1821 and remained in circulation for 147 years in the United States. It was a current events and popular fiction magazine.

The first ever pulsar was discovered by Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Antony Hewish of the University of Cambridge, England.

British actor, Boris Karloff, died at the age of 82. He was one of the most famous horror actors ever to appear on the silver screen.

The first test flight of the Boeing 747 airplane took place. It is one of the most popular and recognizable airplanes of modern times.

Sirhan Sirhan was sentenced to death for assassinating New York senator Robert F. Kennedy. His sentence was afterwards reduced to life in prison.

American actress, Renee Zellweger, was born in Katy, Texas. In 1996 she was catapulted to instant fame after starring in the hit movie "Jerry Maguire" along with actor Tom Cruise.

German tennis player, Steffi Graf, was born in Mannheim. She is generally considered to be one of the greatest female tennis players of all time, having won 22 Grand Slam singles titles.

American rapper and actor, Ice Cube, was born in Los Angeles, California. He is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential hip-hop musicians of all time.

British military commander, Harold Alexander, died at the age of 77. He was one of the highest ranking allied officers during the course of the second world war who at the end of the war the Supreme Commander of Allied Armies in Italy.

The Apollo 11 space craft was launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida. It was the first manned space mission to land on the moon.

Leno & Rosemary LaBianca, were murdered by Charles Manson and members of his cult.

The Woodstock Music and Art Festival opened at a dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York. It lasted three days and for many exemplified the counterculture of the 1960s and the hippie era. Most of the best known musicians of the time performed in the festival.

After a police raid on Spahn Ranch, Charles Manson was arrested.

American boxer, Rocky Marciano, died at the age of 45. He is considered one of the greatest heavyweights of all time and the only boxing champion of any weight class to retire undefeated and without any draws.

A coup d'etat in Somalia brings Siad Barre to power. He ruled Somalia for 22 years under what is considered as one of the most brutal dictatorships ever to rule an African country. Somalia has had no official government body ever since Siad Barre was deposed in 1991 (as of 2006).

The first-ever link between two computers was established on the ARPANET, the predecessor of the modern day Internet.

American actor, Matthew McConaughey, was born in Texas.

Journalist Seymour Hersh breaks the story about the My Lai Massacre committed by American troops in Vietnam. During the incident American troops massacred hundreds of unarmed Vietnamese civilians. The story created widespread outrage around the world and significantly diminished support for the war in Vietnam.

NASA launched the Apollo 12 which was the second manned mission to the Moon.

Soviet submarine K-19 collided with American submarine USS Gato in the Barents Sea.

An Olympic Airways passenger flight crashed near Athens resulting in the death of 93 people.
