	January 8th	English musician, David Bowie, was born in Brixton, London. He is one of the most influential musicians of modern time, who was been producing hits for over 4 decades.
	January 9th	German sociologist, Karl Mannheim, died at the age of 54. He is considered as one of the founders of modern sociology.
	January 25th	American gangster, Al Capone, died at the age of 48. He died in the mental institution to which he had been residing for the last ten years of his jail term.
	February 2nd	American actress, Farrah Fawcett, was born in Texas. She became known after her participation in the hit television series, Charlie's Angels. She is considered as having been the ultimate sex symbol of the 1970's
	February 20th	After the end of the second world war the state of Prussia was abolished.
	March 6th	American actor and filmmaker, Rob Reiner, was born in New York. He is most known for directing the hit movies, Stand By Me, Misery, A Few Good Men and When Harry Met Sally.
	March 19th	American actress, Glenn Close, was born in Greenwich, Connecticut. She has been one of the most successful American film actresses of the 20th and 21st century, having starred in such hit movies as Dangerous Liaisons, Fatal Attraction and The Big Chill.
	March 25th	English musician, Sir Elton John, was born in Pinner, England.
	March 25th	An explosion in a coal mine in Illinois killed 111 people.
	April 1st	King George II of Greece died from a heart attack at the age of 57.
	April 12th	American author, Tom Clancy, was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He is best known for his novel The hunt of red october and its sequels. He is one of the best selling novelists of the 20th century.
	April 12th	American talk show host, David Letterman, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He has hosted one of the most successful and controversial talk shows in American Television history.
	April 16th	American basketball player, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, was born in New york City. He is one of the greatest stars to ever grace the halls of the NBA and a name that still echoes in the halls of the sport even decades after his retirement.
	April 16th	Two ships carrying ammonium nitrate exploded in the harbour of Texas City, Texas, resulting in the death of over 600 people and causing a fire to spread into the city. The explosion was of such intensity that it was mistaken for a nuclear blast.
	April 16th	The term 'Cold War' was first used to describe the state of affairs between the United States and the Soviet Union. It was first used by businessman and presidential adviser, Mr. Bernard Baruch.
	April 18th	American actor, James Woods, was born in Vernal, Utah. He is an avid poker and video games player.
	May 22nd	In accordance with the US's efforts to halt the spread of Communism, US President Harry S. Truman, signed an act into law that granted $400 million in military and economic aid to Turkey and Greece. The act would later be called the Truman Doctrine.
	June 10th	Automotive manufacturing company, Saab, produced its first car.
	June 19th	Indian author, Salman Rushdie, was born in Bombay, India. He is most known for having been the author of the controversial book, Satanic Verses in 1988, which greatly angered the Muslim community and even prompted and a fatwa by Iran's leader Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini, calling for his assassination.
	June 23th	Australian actor, Bryan Brown, was born in Sydney. He is most known for his starring in the hit movies Tai-Pan, Gorillas in the Mist and Cocktail.
	July 22nd	American comedian, Albert Brooks, was born in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.
	July 30th	Austrian-born actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was born in Graz, Austria.
	August 14th	Pakistan gained independence from the British Indian Empire but remained under the administration of the United Kingdom as part of the British Commonwealth.
	August 15th	Indian Muslim politician, Muhammad Ali Jinnah was sworn in as first Governor General of Pakistan at Karachi. He is considered the father of the nation of Pakistan.
	August 21st	Italian automobile manufacturer, Ettore Bugatti, died at the age of 65. He was the founder of the Bugatti cars company, one of the most exclusive car brands in history.
	August 25th	American actress, Anne Archer, was born in Los Angeles, California. She became a star after staring in the hit 1987 thriller, Fatal Attraction.
	September 3rd	A cholera epidemic broke out in Egypt which cost the life of over 7000 people.
	September 14th	New Zealand actor, Sam Neill, was born in Omagh, Northern Ireland. His father was serving in the British army in Ireland at the time of his birth. The Neil family were the owners the largest liquor retailer in New Zealand.
	September 21st	American author, Stephen King, was born in Portland, Maine. He is best known for his enormously successful horror novels and is one of the most widely read authors of the 20th century. In 1999 he was struck by a driver while he was crossing the street and was hospitalized for several weeks for severe injuries, the driver of the car that struck him, a disabled construction worker, died in his sleep on September 21, 2000, the day of King's birthday.
	September 30th	The Islamic Republic of Pakistan joined the United Nations.
	October 9th	French singer, France Gall, was born in Paris. She had won first place in the Eurovision song contest, while representing Luxenburg and also became a huge hit, in 1988, when she released the song "Ella, elle l'a" which reached the top of the charts in many countries simultaneously.
	October 24th	Walt Disney testified to the House of Unamerican Activities Committee, actually naming employees he believed to be communists. It is a dark chapter of his life, which has followed Walt Disney even after his death.
	October 29th	American actor, Richard Dreyfuss, was born in New York.
	November 13th	American actor, Joe Mantegna, was born in Chicago, Illinois. His most famous role was that of Joey Zasa, a mobster in the third Godfather movie.
	November 20th	The Princess Elizabeth married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey in London.
	December 2nd	Riots broke out in the city of Jerusalem in response to the approval of the UN Plan to partition Palestine.
	December 29th	American actor, Ted Danson, was born in San Diego, California. He gained international fame from his participation in the highly successful television series, Cheers.
