American actress, Rita Hayworth, was born in Brooklyn, New York. She was the female sex symbol of the 1940s and is considered by many as the first female superstar. She died as a result of Alzheimer's disease.
American author, Arthur Miller, was born. He is considered as one of the great playwrights of the 20th century, having written such classics as "Death of a Salesman". He was also known for his marriage to Marilyn Monroe which lasted between 1956 and 1961.
American cartoonist, Jerry Siegel, was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the co-creator of Superman.
Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia declared war on the Ottoman Empire, marking the beginning of the First Balkan War.
Polish-French composer, Frederic Chopin, died at the age of 39 due to pulmonary tuberculosis. He is generally acknowledged as one of the greatest piano composers of all time.
During the course of the American revolutionary war, American troops defeated the British in the Battle of Saratoga. The battle is considered as having been one of the most critical of the war.
German astronomer Johannes Kepler observed that a bright star had suddenly appeared in the night sky. It turned out to be the last supernova to have been observed in our galaxy.
