Croatian basketball player, Drazen Petrovic, was born in Sibenik Croatia. He was a star European basketball player and one of the first Europeans to achieve a dominant role in the NBA. Tragically, he had established himself, as the star of the New York Nets team the year he died in a car accident while vacationing in Germany.
French philosopher, Jean-Paul Sartre, refused to accept the Nobel Prize for Literature after stating that he never accepted official honors and that he did not want to align himself with any particular institution.
Laos gained independence from France.
French actress, Catherine Deneuve, was born in Paris. She is considered as one of the most successful European actresses who never embraced holywood.
English actor, Derek Jacobi, was born in London. He is considered as one of the best actors of his generation who was knighted in 1994 knighted for his contribution to theatre. Like Laurence Olivier he was also knighted in Denmark.
American actor, Christopher Lloyd, was born in Connecticut. He became famous for his part in the hit television series Taxi and his part in the Back to the Future trilogy of movies.
French painter, Paul Cezanne, died at the age of 67. He is considered as one of the most important post-Impressionism painter and considered by many as the father of Cubism.
