American diver, Greg Louganis, was born in California. He is one of the most renowned Olympic divers of the late 20th century, who won a total of 4 gold Olympic medals.

Disney's animated classic, Sleeping Beauty, was released.
1954 
American entertainer, Oprah Winfrey, was born in Mississippi. She is a producer, actress, and publisher who is probably the most financially successful entertainer in America and one of the richest people in the world.
1945 
American actor, Tom Selleck, was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was the first selection for the role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark but was unable to take the part due to his engagement in the television series, Magnum.
1944 
The battleship USS Missouri was launched. It was one of the most famous naval vessels of the 20th century. It was the last battleship built by the United States and was the site of the Japanese surrender during World War II.
1933 
Adolf Hitler was appointed to the position of Chancellor of Germany by ailing president of Germany. Paul von Hindenburg.
1918 
American actor, John Forsythe, was born in New Jersey. He was a popular television actor whose career spanned four decades and enjoyed such prominent roles as Charlie in the popular serie, Charlie's Angels and Blake Carrington in the popular 1980s soap opera, Dynasty.
1886 
Automobile pioneer Karl Benz received a patent for the first gasoline powered automobile.
1861 
Kansas was admitted as the 34th U.S. state.

Russian writer, Anton Chekhov, was born in Taganrog, Russia. He was one of the most influential literary figures of the 19th century.
