A fire aboard the space capsule at Cape Kennedy, Florida, killed astronauts Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H. White, and Roger Chaffee.
The Outer Space Treaty was signed which stipulated the banning of deploying nuclear weapons in earth's orbit.
American actress, Bridget Fonda, was born in Los Angeles, California. She is the daughter of actor Peter Fonda and the niece of actress Jane Fonda.
American actress, Mimi Rogers, was born in Florida. Apart from an actress, she is also a competitive poker player.
The Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz was liberated by the army of the Soviet Union.
Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi, died at the age of 87. He is considered by many as the most influential composer of the 19th century's Italian School of Opera.
Austrian writer, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, was born in Lemberg, Austria (now Ukraine). His most famous novel is Venus in Furs and the masochism was coined by psychiatrist Krafft-Ebing in relation to Masoch's work.
British author, Lewis Carroll, was born in Warrington, Cheshire. He was born, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, but is most remembered under his pen name. He is considered as one of the most influential writers of English literature who wrote the classics, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass.
Austrian composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was born in Salzburg. He was one of the most influential and popular composers of classical music.
