Lotus 1-2-3 is released. it was one of the most popular applications ever to be released for the (IBM) PC. During the 1980's and early 1990's it was one of the most popular corporate computer applications available.

French actor, Louis de Funes, died at the age of 69. He was France's foremost comedy actor who enjoyed wide international fame.
February
18th
Thirteen people were shot dead during the robbery of an illegal gambling club in Seattle, USA. It is one of the worst, robbery motivated, murder cases in history.

The final episode of M*A*S*H was broadcast in the USA. It was one of the most watched episodes in the history of television. The show had been in production since 1972.

The first Swatch watches were introduced to the public.

11th
Mexican actress, Dolores del Rio, died at the age of 78 in Laguna Beach, California. She was a star in the Hollywood era of silent movies and one of the biggest stars of Spanish speaking Latin America for many decades.

Tokyo Disneyland opened. It is the only Disney theme park not owned the Walt Disney Company but rather the owner company leases the theme from them.

A suicide bomber detonated a van filled with explosives outside the United States embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 63 people. The van was stolen from the embassy earlier the same year.

Margaret Thatcher was elected for a second term by a landslide victory in the British General Election.

The Pioneer 10 space probe became the first manmade object to leave the confines of our solar system. The spacecraft was launched in 1972 and its last signal was received in 2003.

Korean Air Flight 007 was shot down by a Soviet Union fighter plane when Flight 007 entered Soviet airspace. All 269 people on board died.

Greek actress, Ellie Lambeti, died at the age of 57. She was one of the most celebrated actress in Greece, with a career that spanned almost 40 years.

Vanessa Williams became the first ever African-American Miss America. She was forced to resign her title in 1984, when was discovered that 2 years earlier she had posed nude for photographs.

The Caribbean federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis joined the United Nations.

The Australia II sailing boat became the first non-American boat to win the Americas Cup. The New York Yacht Club had remained the unbeaten champion for over 25 challenges in over 113 years making it by far the longest winning streak in the history of any sport.

Japan's former prime minister, Tanaka Kakuei, was convicted to four years in prison for taking a $2 million bribe from the Lockheed company.

The television movie, The Day After, was aired in America. An estimated 100 million people watched the film on that day.

In London's Heathrow Airport, 6,800 bars of gold were stolen from the Brinks Mat vault. At an approximate worth of 26 million pounds. Although the robbers were captured and tried, most of the gold was never recovered.

A Colombian passenger jet crashed near Madrid's Barajas Airport, resulting in the death of 183 people.

Democracy was restored in Argentina after a right-wing military dictatorship has assumed power in 1976.

Lech Walesa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work as the leader of Solidarity. Solidarity was a trade union federation and a force in the anti-communist social movement.

An IRA bomb exploded inside the Harrods Department Store in London, resulting in the death of seven people.
