Austrian writer, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, was born in Lemberg, Austria (now Ukraine). His most famous novel is Venus in Furs and the masochism was coined by psychiatrist Krafft-Ebing in relation to Masoch's work. |

The Siege of the Alamo began in San Antonio, Texas. It was a battle that was fought between the forces of the Republic of Mexico and rebel Texan forces. The battle ended with the Mexican Army claiming victory after a 12 day siege, although Mexican forces won the battle it had the effect of raising considerable support for Texan independence. |
