January
27th
Austrian writer, Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, was born in Lemberg, Austria (now Ukraine). His most famous novel is Venus in Furs and the masochism was coined by psychiatrist Krafft-Ebing in relation to Masoch's work.
February
23th
The Siege of the Alamo began in San Antonio, Texas. It was a battle that was fought between the forces of the Republic of Mexico and rebel Texan forces. The battle ended with the Mexican Army claiming victory after a 12 day siege, although Mexican forces won the battle it had the effect of raising considerable support for Texan independence.
March
6th
American frontiersman, Davy Crockett, died at the age of 49. He died in the battle of the Alamo.
May
16th
British writer, Edgar Allan Poe, married his 13-year-old cousin Virginia.
June
15th
Arkansas was admitted as the 25th US state.
July
8th
British politician, Joseph Chamberlain, was born in London. He was one of the most influential British politicians throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
