Greek musician, Vassilis Tsitsanis, died at the age of 69. He is considered as the most influential composer and performer of rebetiko music.
A passenger train in Australia was derailed in that countries worst rail disaster. 83 people died in the accident.
Serial killer, Albert DeSalvo, also known as the 'Boston Strangler' was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was a serial killer active in Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1960's.
American actor, Kevin Costner, was born in California.
During the course of the Second World War, Soviet troops repelled the German army that had been besieging the city of Leningrad for three years.
British writer, Rudyard Kipling, died at the age of 71. He was a writer who was one of the most celebrated of the start of the 20th century, and is best known for his children's book, The Jungle Book. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, becoming both the youngest person and the first English language writer to ever receive the award.
Bentley Motors was founded by Walter Owen Bentley.
British actor, Cary Grant, was born in Bristol, England. He was one of the most celebrated and famous actors of 20th century cinema and one who set the standards by which a whole generation of actors was judged with.
English settlers arrived at Australia's Botany Bay and established a penal colony.
