The first ever electric lighting system employing overhead wires began servicing the town of Roselle, New Jersey. It had been built by Thomas Edison.
Argentine writer, Esteban Echeverria, died at the age of 78. He is considered as one of the most influential Latin American authors of the 19th century.
French painter, Paul Cezanne, was born in Aix-en-Provence, France. He is considered as one of the most important post-Impressionism painter and considered by many as the father of Cubism.
American writer and poet, Edgar Allan Poe, was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was one of the leaders of the American Romantic Movement.
American general, Robert E. Lee, was born in Lexington, Virginia. He was the most successful general of the Confederate forces during the American Civil War.
Scottish inventor, James Watt, was born in Greenock, Scotland. He invented the steam engine.
