January
14th
Ottoman Sultan, Mehmed VI, was born in Constantinople. He was the 36th and last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.
January
29th
Kansas was admitted as the 34th U.S. state.
February
18th
American politician, Jefferson Davis, was inaugurated as the first and only (provisional) President of the Confederate States of America. After the American civil war was over, he was imprisoned for 2 years and subsequently released without ever being charged with a crime.
March
20th
A strong earthquake destroyed the city of Mendoza in the western part of Argentina. More than 5000 people died in the destruction.
April
12th
The American Civil War began with the first military action taken against Fort Sumter, in the harbour of Charleston, South Carolina.
June
8th
The state of Tennessee seceded from the Union.
