Italian fashion designer, Gianni Versace, died at the age of 50. He was shot dead outside his ocean-front mansion in Miami Beach, Florida

A coup d'etat took place in Cyprus, deposing president Makarios and installing Nikos Sampson as president. Sampson himself was forced to resign when Turkey invaded Cyprus eight days later.

American actor, Forest Whitaker, was born in Longview, Texas. He is most known for his roles in the hit movies Platoon, Good Morning Vietnam and The Crying Game.

Canadian actress, Lolita Davidovich, was born in Ontario.

The Mainau Declaration against nuclear weapons was signed by eighteen Nobel prize laureates.

The first flight of the Boeing 707 took place. It was the first American made jet passenger aircraft.

Professional wrestler and politician, Jesse Ventura, was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was a star of professional wrestling in the United States who was later elected Governor of the state of Minnesota.
1946 
Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, was born in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. He is the current ruler of the Sultanate and is one of the richest men in the world.
1927 
85 protesters were killed by the Austrian police in Vienna. The victims were members of the Austrian Socialist party.
1916 
The Pacific Aero Products company was incorporated in Seattle, Washington, USA, by William Boeing and George Conrad Westervelt. The company was later renamed to, and is still known as, Boeing.
1799 
The Rosetta Stone was discovered in the Egyptian village of Rosetta, by French Captain Pierre-Francois Bouchard. It was created in 196 BC and is considered as one of the most significant archaeological finds of modern times as it contained the same text in two Egyptian language scripts (hieroglyphic and demotic) and in classical Greek, thus allowing for the translation of the first which had been previously impossible.
