In the United States, The House of Representatives Judiciary Committee votes to recommend the first article of impeachment against then president Richard Nixon for obstruction of justice.
Rock band, Pink Floyd, released their second album 'A Saucerful of Secrets'.
American writer, Gertrude Stein, died at the age of 72 in France. She was one of the figureheads of modern art and literature in the 20th century.
The laying of the 'Atlantic Cable' was successfully completed making transatlantic telegraph communication a reality. The first telegram sent was a letter of congratulation from Queen Victoria of England to United States president James Buchanan.
