Bahrain declared its independence. It had been under British governorship until the 1960's and was protected under the charter of the United Nations until its declaration of independence. UN protection became necessary because Iran had laid claim to the island. |

The Woodstock Music and Art Festival opened at a dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York. It lasted three days and for many exemplified the counterculture of the 1960s and the hippie era. Most of the best known musicians of the time performed in the festival. |

The Republic of Korea was established. It was recognized by the United Nations on December of the same year. |

Indian Muslim politician, Muhammad Ali Jinnah was sworn in as first Governor General of Pakistan at Karachi. He is considered the father of the nation of Pakistan. |
