American actor, Charles Bronson, died at the age of 82. He was one of 15 children born to a Lithuanian immigrant. In 1943, he joined the United States Army Air Forces and served in the European front as the gunner onboard B-29 bombers. He is most remembered for his numerous 'tough guy' roles.
1974 
A passenger train travelling from Belgrade to Dortmund derailed while entering the main train station in Zagreb. 153 passengers died in the accident.
1972 
American actress, Cameron Diaz, was born in San Diego, California. At the age of 16, she began her career as a fashion model with the top modelling agency, Elite Model Management.
1972 
Czech football player, Pavel Nedved, was born in Cheb. He is widely considered as one of the best Czech footballers of all time.
1963 
British disc jockey, Paul Oakenfold, was born in London. He is a record producer and one of the best-known DJ's in the world.
1945 
British forces liberated Hong Kong which had been occupied by Japan for almost four years.
1937 
New Zealand race driver, Bruce McLaren, was born in Auckland. He was one of the most successful race drivers of his generation who was one of the dominant drivers of the Canadian-American Challenge racing competition. He was also the founder of Team McLaren which has been one of the most successful in Formula One championship history.
1914 
The Battle of Tannenberg took place. It was one of the most decisive battles of the First World War, which was fought between Germany and Russia. The battle resulted in one of the worst defeats in Russian history.
1898 
American actress, Shirley Booth, was born in New York City. She was one of the most celebrated female actresses in the history of American radio, television and cinema and theatre.
1835 
The city of Melbourne, Australia was founded by British colonists. The area was already inhabited by the indigenous Kulin people.
1797 
English writer, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, was born in London. She was the author of the classic novel, Frankenstein.
