American actor, William Baldwin, was born in New York. He achieved fame early in his career having been able to get high profile roles in film such as Backdraft and Flatliners, but was unable sustain such high profile roles in later years.

The music album, Please Please Me, by the Beatles was released in the United Kingdom. It was the first album recorded by The Beatles.

The Mount Agung volcano in Bali, erupted, causing widespread devastation which resulted in the death of more than 1,000 people.

Canadian comedian, Mike Myers, was born in Scarborough, Ontario. He first became a celebrity after the hit 'Saturday Night Live' clips of 'Wayne's World', which subsequently turned to 2 box office movie hits. He is most known today for his creation and performance of the comic super spy, Austin Powers.

A Northwest Airlines passenger jet crashed in the Pacific Ocean near the coast of British Columbia. All 101 passengers died in the crash.

American actor, Johnny Depp, was born in Owensboro, Kentucky. He is a highly popular actor, known for his affinity for strange character role and his numerous associations with the prolific director, Tim Burton.
