Edward Brooke became the first African American to be elected to the United States Senate.
1965 
The soap opera Days of Our Lives debuted on the NBC channel in the United States. It is still in production 41 years later (2006).
1953 
Russian writer, Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin, died at the age of 83. He was the first Russian to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1933. He is one of the most widely read Russian authors of all time.
1952 
American, Christie Hefner, was born in Chicago, Illinois. She is the daughter of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and the CEO of Playboy Enterprises.
1939 
German dictator, Adolf Hitler, escaped an assassination attempt in Munich.
1935 
French actor, Alain Delon, was born in Sceaux. He is one of the most recognized French actors of all time.
1895 
During his experimentation with electricity, German physicist Wilhelm Rontgen, discovered x-rays. He was the first person to ever receive the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1901.
1889 
Montana was admitted as the 41st U.S. state.
1887 
American gunfighter, Doc Holiday, died at the age of 36. One of the most famous gunfighters of the American west he is best remembered for his association with law man, Wyatt Earp, and the famous Gunfight at the OK Corral. He was also a dentist.
