The United States government barred actor and producer Charlie Chaplin from returning to the US after a trip to England. Chaplin, although a British citizen, lived and worked in the United States most of his life. The director of the FBI at the time, J. Edgar Hoover, had labelled Chaplin a suspected communist sympathiser and was one who arranged that his readmission to the US be denied. After the incident he decided to remain in Europe for the rest of his life and only made a single trip back to the United States in 1972 to receive an honorary academy award. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975 and honour that was to be conferred to him in 1956, which was actually vetoed by the British government so as to not offend the government of the United States. |
