The Columbia Phonograph record company was formed in Washington, DC. The company is now a subsidiary of Sony BMG.
March
31st
The Eiffel Tower of Paris, was inaugurated. The tower was the worlds tallest building in the world until 1930 and it was build as the gate for the exhibition that was to mark the centennial celebration of the French Revolution. Construction of the tower took 3 years.
April
16th
English actor and producer, Charles Chaplin, was born in London, England.
April
20th
Austrian born politician and dictator, Adolf Hitler, was born at Braunau am Inn, Austria.
April
22nd
The Oklahoma land rush took place. Over 50,000 potential settlers were poised on all four borders of the territory. Despite assurances to the contrary by the US Army, most of the land was already marked by settlers who had sneaked in before the opening of the rush.

6th
The Eiffel Tower officially opened during the Universal Exposition in Paris.

12th
British entrepreneur, John Cadbury, died at the age of 88. He was the founder of what is one of the most well known chocolate brands in the world. Although he did own a small chocolate business, it was his sons that expanded the company to the giant that it became in later years.
June
12th
88 people were killed near Armagh in Northern Ireland, when the backwards rail cart detached from a train while on an incline and then collided with a following train. It was the worst train dissaster in Europe during the 19th century.
July
8th
The financial newspaper, Wall Street Journal, was first published. It is one of the newspapers with the largest circulation in the United States, as well as a strong presence on a global scale.

The city of Tijuana, Mexico was founded.
October
11th
English physicist, James Prescott Joule, died at the age of 71. He is credited with discovering the relationship of heat to mechanical work and also worked closely with fellow physicist, Lord Kelvin, to develop the absolute scale of temperature. The joule, which is the unit of energy, is named after him.
November
2nd
North and South Dakota were admitted as the 39th and 40th U.S. states.

8th
Montana was admitted as the 41st U.S. state.
November
11th
Washington was admitted as the 42nd U.S. state.

14th
Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, was born in Allahabad. He was one of the most important leaders of the Indian Independence Movement and the first Prime Minister of India.
