American singer, Marvin Gaye, was born in Washington, D.C. He is best remembered by the song that made him famous worldwide, "I Heard It through the Grapevine".

Tunisian-born actress, Claudia Cardinale, was born in Tunis, Tunisia. She is one of the most prominent European actresses of the golden age of Italian cinema (1960's) and has starred in movies such as Federico Fellini's 8 1/2 and Sergio Leone's epic Once Upon a Time in the West.

American actor, Harvey Keitel, was born in Brooklyn, New York.

Peruvian, Lina Medina, became the world's youngest mother in medical history at the age of five.

Scottish race car driver, Jackie Stewart, was born in Milton, West Dunbartonshire. Known as the 'The Flying Scot,' he competed in Formula One between 1965 and 1973, winning the title of champion 3 times.

Lou Gehrig was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

British actor, Terence Stamp, was born in London, England. He is a popular support actor who gained international fame for portraying the villain General Zod, in the 1980 movie, Superman II and more recently Chancellor Finis Valorum in Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Italian politician and one time President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, was born in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed a Non-aggression Pact.

American film director, Joel Schumacher, was born in New York City.

Australian actor, George Lazenby, was born in Queanbeyan, Australia. He is best known for portraying James Bond in the 1969 film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service. He was subsequently replaced by actor Roger Moore.

Canada declared war on Nazi Germany.

Austrian psychiatrist, Sigmund Freud, died at the age of 83. He was educated as a neurologist and is considered the father of psychoanalysis. In 1933, as the Nazis seized power in Germany, Freud's books were burnt publicly, actions which prompted him to move to England. He had been diagnosed with and treated numerous times for cancer of the mouth and had his jaw removed. He lived with constant pain, which at the end proved to be intolerable for him. His death was caused by a physician assisted morphine overdose.

The city of Warsaw surrendered to the invading armies of both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, 12 days after they simultaneously invaded Poland.

American, Lee Harvey Oswald, was born in Louisiana, USA. He was the man who was convicted for the assassination of US president John F. Kennedy. Two days after his arrest he was shot and killed by Jack Ruby on live television while in police custody.

British actor, John Cleese, was born in Somerset, England. He was one of the original members of the comedy group Monty Python and is considered as one of the great British comic actors. He also co-wrote and stared in the British television hit series Fawlty Towers.

German dictator, Adolf Hitler, escaped an assassination attempt in Munich.

American singer, Tina Turner, was born in Tennessee. She bacame famous along with her husband with the 'The Ike and Tina Turner Revue' during the 1960s and 1970s. She made a solo comeback during the 1980's which catapulted her to international fame.
December
12th
American actor, Douglas Fairbanks, died at the age of 56. He is considered to have been the first true action hero of the silver screen. In 1919 he was one of the co-founders of United Artists. He was married to fellow actress Mary Pickford, it is known as the first Hollywood celebrity marriage. The couple separated in 1933.

15th
The movie, Gone with the Wind, premiered. It is one of the most famous and financially successful films ever created.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was introduced by Montgomery Ward department stores. It was written and published in order to be handed out to children during the Christmas holiday period.
