American musician, Elvis Presley, was born in East Tupelo, Mississippi. He was crowned 'The King of Rock 'n' Roll' or simply 'The King', and was one of the most popular singers of all time, whose fame has been undiminished decades after his death.

Iceland was the first western country to legalize abortion. Abortions were legal in the Soviet Union since 1920.

Nylon was discovered by Gerard J. Berchet of the 'Wallace Carothers' research group at the DuPont company.

In direct violation of the treaty of Versailles, Adolf Hitler began the rearmament of Germany by instituting conscription.

American actor, Charles Grodin, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He did not start acting till his 35th year of age and is one of the few actors to have been banned from the famed comedy show "Saturday Night Live", due to his poor performance in an episode of the show.

British, Thomas Edward Lawrence, died at the age of 47. He was the British liaison officer during the Arab Revolt of 1916 to 1918. He is considered as a hero of both the British and the Arab people.

Greek popular singer, Marinella, was born in Thessalonica.

Construction of the Hoover Dam was completed. Construction took 5 years and it was named after Herbert Hoover, who played an instrumental role in its construction, first as Secretary of Commerce and then later as the 31st President of the United States.

The United States Social Security Act was passed into law. It effectively created a government supported pension system for the retired.

American musician Jerry Lee Lewis was born in Louisiana, USA. He was hugely popular musician during the 50's, with such international hits as 'Great Balls of Fire' in his repertoire. He fell from fame due to several scandals which followed him throughout the years, keeping him out of fame's spotlight

British actress and singer, Julie Andrews, was born in Surrey, England. She is considered as a legendary actress who became famous for her starring roles in the musical classics, Mary Poppins and The Sound Of Music.

Italy invaded Abyssinia (Modern day Ethiopia).

Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, was born in Modena, Italy. He is one of the most famous tenors of the 20th century. He retired in 2004.

New York gangster, Dutch Schultz, was fatally shot in a bar in Newark, New Jersey, along with his bodyguards by three hit men of the organization that has been known as Murder Incorporated.

A strong hurricane hit Haiti resulting in the death of over 2,000 people.

George II of Greece regained his throne after his son Alexander who had succeeded him died from an infection he contracted when he was bitten by a pet monkey.

The first ever flight of a Douglas DC-3 airplane took place. It is considered as one of the most significant aircraft ever created.

American talk show host, Phil Donahue, was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the creator and host of The Phil Donahue Show which run for 27 years on American national television.
