German film director, Wolfgang Petersen, was born in Emden. He is best known for the World War II classic, Das Boot as well as the more recent movies, In the Line of Fire and Air Force One.
British actor, Michael Caine, was born in Rotherhithe, London. He is one of the most popular British actors of the 20th and 21st centuries.
American musician, Quincy Jones, was born in Chicago, Illinois. He is one of the most influential producers of popular music of the 20th century, having produced two of the best selling albums of all time, Michael Jackson's "The Thriller" and the charity song "We Are the World".
American inventor, George Eastman, died at the age of 77. He was the inventor of the roll film and the founder of the Eastman Kodak Corporation.
The British football club, Chelsea FC, was founded.
German political philosopher, Karl Marx, died at the age of 64. He was one of the most influential political thinkers of the modern age, whose idea's on social structure and political ideology shaped the political stage on a worldwide scale for almost 2 centuries. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were the co-authors of the Communist Manifesto, which had been commissioned by the Communist Leauge.
German born physicist, Albert Einstein, was born in Ulm, Germany. One of the most famous scientists of all time, he was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921. Contrary to common belief he had not been awarded the Nobel prize for his Theory of Relativity, but rather for his explanation of the photoelectric effect. While he was growing up he has even been characterized as retarded due to his total lack of interest in most school subjects.
Swiss painter, Ferdinand Hodler, was born in Berne. He was one of the most famous Swiss painters of all time and one of the most prominent painters of the realism movement of the 19th century.
