The Cullinan Diamond, the worlds largest diamond, was found in South Africa. It is currently owned by the Queen of England.

Austrian singer, Maria von Trapp, was born in Vienna. Her family's story, including their escape from the Nazis, was the inspiration for the hit musical, The Sound of Music.

2nd
American author, Ayn Rand, was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. She was one of the most prominent authors of the second half of the 20th century.
March
14th
The British football club, Chelsea FC, was founded.
March
23th
American actress, Joan Crawford, was born in San Antonio, Texas. She was one of the biggest stars of the early decades of American cinema.
April
4th
A massive earthquake hit the area of Kangra, India killing over 360,000 people.
May
10th
Greek composer, Markos Vamvakaris, was born on the island of Syros. He is considered the most influential figure of the 'rebetiko' musical movement.
June
21st
French philosopher, Jean-Paul Sartre, was born in Paris. He is considered as one of the great philosophers and writers of the 20th century and was a proponent of the existentialism movement. He was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1964, but he declined to accept it, stating that he did not want to align himself with any institution.

1st
The provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan joined the Canadian confederation.

Swedish actress, Greta Garbo, was born in Stockholm. She is considered by many as the ultimate movie star of the 20's and 30's. She retired from acting altogether in 1941 after the failure of her last picture. She spent the rest of her life in seclusion, leading a very private life, completely avoiding any public appearances.
October
26th
Norway became independent from Sweden after a peaceful separation of the two countries. Norway had been forced into union with Sweden in 1814.
November
28th
The Sinn Fein political party was founded with the single purpose of establishing the independence of Ireland.
December
9th
In France, a law was passed which separated church and state.
