Emperor Haile Selassie I was given an Imperial funeral by the Ethiopian Orthodox church 25 years after his death.

American boxer, George Foreman, became the world's oldest heavyweight champion at the age of 45 after knocking out Michael Moorer.

Russian pianist, Vladimir Horowitz, died at the age of 86. He is considered by many as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century.

Dutch model and actress, Famke Janssen, was born in Amstelveen, The Netherlands. She was a top fashion model before migrating to an acting career. She is famous for her participation in the James Bond move, GoldenEye, as well as the X-Men series of movies.

Canadian musician, Bryan Adams, was born in Kingston, Ontario.

American basketball player, Bill Walton, was born in San Diego, California.
1935 
The board game Monopoly was released for the first time by the company Parker Brothers.

The United Kingdom annexed Cyprus, and along with France declared war on the Ottoman Empire.
1862 
In Minnesota, more than 300 Santee Sioux Indians were accused of raping and murdering white settlers and are sentenced to die by hanging.
