British actor, Sir John Gielgud, died at the age of 96. He was one of Britain's most acclaimed actors who had gained worldwide recognition (as well as an academy award) for his role as the butler in the Hollywood hit comedy "Arthur".

America Online announced that it had reached an agreement under which it would buy Time Warner for the staggering amount of $162 billion. It was the largest company merger in history.

An Alaska Airlines passenger jet crashed in the Pacific ocean resulting in the death of all 88 people on board.
February
12th
American football coach, Tom Landry, died at the age of 75. He is considered as one of the greatest coaches in American football history.

A six year old student in Township, Michigan, USA, shot and killed another student, also six years old, at Theo J. Buell Elementary School. The victim is the youngest ever to die in a school shooting.
March

Vladimir Putin was elected president of Russia.
April
19th
An Air Philippines passenger jet crashed near Davao City, Philippines. 131 passengers died in the crash.

Panathinaikos won the European champions basketball cup for the second time in the team's history.

The Big Number Change took place in the United Kingdom, in order to expand the available pool of telephone numbers that were nearing exhaustion in the 90's.

A fireworks factory exploded in Enschede, Netherlands. The explosion killed twenty two and wounded approximately one thousand people.

Israel's troops withdraw from Lebanon after 22 years. Despite the 22 year presence of Israeli troops in Lebanon, there had never been any formal declaration of war between the two countries.

President of Syria, Hafez al-Assad, died at the age of 69. He was the leader of Syria from 1971 till his death in 2000. He was succeeded by his son, and Syria's current president, Bashar al-Assad.

Italian actor, Vittorio Gassman, died at the age of 77. He is widely acknowledged as one of the best actors of his generation, who achieved worldwide fame even though his participation in international productions was limited.

American actor, Walter Matthau, died at the age of 79. He was most known for his role in The Odd Couple and his frequent collaborations with fellow actor Jack Lemmon.

A leaking oil pipeline in Nigeria, exploded, resulting in the death of more than 250 people who were scavenging the leaking fuel.

The Air France Concorde flight 4590, crashed right after it had taken off from Paris airport. All 109 passengers as well as 5 people on the ground died.

5th
British actor, Alec Guinness, died at the age of 85. He is widely acknowledged as having been one of the most talented actors of the 20th century.

12th
The Russian nuclear cruise missile submarine Kursk exploded and sank in the Barents Sea during a military exercise. No official explanation has been given for the accident which cost the lives of 118 crewmen.

A Gulf Air passenger jet crashed into the Persian Gulf near Bahrain. 143 people died in the crash.

The Polynesian island nation of Tuvalu joined the United Nations.

Albania officially joined the World Trade Organization.

The last performance of the musical hit show 'Cats' took place on Broadway. Cats was first performed in London's West End, at New London Theatre, on May 11, 1981.

Mass demonstrations in the city of Belgrade lead to resignation of Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic.

In the port of Aden, Yemen, the missile destroyer ship, USS Cole, was heavily damaged when two suicide bombers detonated explosives on the side of the ship, killing 17 members of the crew.

A Singapore Airlines passenger jet collided with construction equipment upon takeoff from Taipei airport in Taiwan, resulting in the death of 83 people on board.

An earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale hit the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku. 25 people died and tens of buildings suffered extensive damage.
