Israel's troops withdraw from Lebanon after 22 years. Despite the 22 year presence of Israeli troops in Lebanon, there had never been any formal declaration of war between the two countries.

Eritrea gained its independence from Ethiopia. Eritrea is one of the youngest independent countries in the world.

Microsoft unveiled it Windows NT operating system. As the name suggests this was the company's grand move to the server/network operating system.

American musician, Duke Ellington, died at the age of 75. He was one of the most influential figures of the Jazz musical movement.
1941 
American musician, Bob Dylan, was born in Duluth, Minnesota. He is one of the most successful musicians of the 20th century and a civil rights activist throughout his life. His birth name was Robert Allen Zimmerman.
1940 
Russian-born poet, Joseph Brodsky, was born in Leningrad. He is considered as one of the most influential poets of the 20th century and was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1987.
1929 
The first film to star the legendary 'Marx Brothers', premiered.
1883 
Construction of the Brooklyn Bridge of New York city finished and the bridge opened, 14 years after construction had began.
1830 
One of the worlds most famous nursery rhymes, 'Mary had a little lamb' was published by Sarah Hale, a resident of New Hampshire, USA.
1798 
The Irish republican rebellion began. The rebellion lasted a few months, and despite some assistance from the French, it was crushed by British forces.
1626 
Dutch explorer, Peter Minuit, buys Manhattan from a tribe of native indians. It is rumored that the purchase was accomplished by only a handful of trade goods.
