Benvenuto Cellini's Saliera (salt shaker) was stolen from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The estimated price to the saliera was 50 million euros. It was later recovered in 2006.
1996 
A flight of ValuJet airways from Miami to Atlanta crashed in the Florida Everglades killing all 110 on board.
1987 
The first heart and lung transplant took place.
1981 
Jamaican singer and musician, Bob Marley, died at the age of 36. He is the most widely known writer and performer of Reggae music and the one that made it popular around the world. He died from cancer, his last words to his son were 'Money can't buy life'.
1963 
British actress, Natasha Richardson, was born in London England. She is the daughter of director Tony Richardson and actress Vanessa Redgrave.
1949 
The country of Siam changed its name to Thailand.
1904 
Spanish painter, Salvador Dali, was born in Catalonia, Spain. He is universally accepted one of the most important painters of the 20th century. He was heavily criticized as being a supporter of General Franco's fascist regime.
1776 
Greek revolutionary, Laskarina Bouboulina, was born in Constantinople. She was one of the most prolific personas of the Greek war for independence of 1821.
