American boxer, George Foreman, was born in Texas. He was two times the world champion in boxing and is regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers in the history of the sport. He won his second title at the age of 45, the oldest fighter ever to win the world Heavyweight title, and almost 20 years after losing his first title.

American comedian, Andy Kaufman, was born in New York. He is most remembered by his role in the hit TV series, Taxi.

The first ever situation comedy (sitcom), The Goldbergs, premiered on American television. It was produced until 1947.

American actor, John Belushi, was born in Chicago, Illinois. He is most remembered for his work on the hit comedy show 'Saturday Night Live' and cult movie The Blues Brothers. He died from what is known as a speedball, an injection of cocaine and heroin.

David Ben-Gurion was elected as the first Israeli prime minister.
February
2nd
American actor, Brent Spiner, was born in Texas. He is best known for his portrayal of the android, Data, in the hit Star Trek: The Next Generation television and movie series.

The play 'Death of a Salesman', by Arthur Miller, premiered on Broadway. It is considered as the most classic play in American theatre history.

American film director and producer, Rob Cohen, was born in New York. He is most known for his production of the hit movies The Witches of Eastwick, The Serpent and the Rainbow, and The Running Man, as well as his directing of the films XXX and The Fast and the Furious. In 2005 he directed the movie, Stealth, which proved to be one of the biggest, cinematic, financial disasters of all time.

American actress, Jessica Lange, was born in Cloquet, Minnesota, USA. She stared in the 1976 remake of King Kong by director Dino De Laurentiis. The film was a financial and critical disaster, but she managed to bounce back after co-staring in the critically acclaimed movie "The postman always rings twice".

An airplane carrying the Torino football team crashed killing all aboard.

American musician, Billy Joel, was born in the Bronx, New York.

The country of Siam changed its name to Thailand.

American actress, Meryl Streep, was born in Summit, New Jersey. She is the most nominated performer in Academy Award history with 13 nominations.

American actress, Shelley Duvall, was born in Houston, Texas. She is most known for her part in the horror classic, The Shining.

20th
Israel and Syria signed a truce, ending a war that had raged between them for 19 straight months.
August
8th
Bhutan became an independent nation. It was previously governed, in part, by Great British.

The Soviet Union detonated its first atomic bomb, at a test site in Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan.

American actor, Richard Gere, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His acting career took off in 1980, with the successful film American Gigolo, after which he has been one of the main leading of American cinema.

American, Howard Unruh, killed 13 of his neighbours in the town of Camden, New Jersey, using a souvenir Luger pistol. He was first single-episode mass murderer in the United States.

The television series The Lone Ranger premiered on the ABC channel. It was a continuation of the immensely popular radio show by the same name which had first aired in 1933 and had run for almost 3000 episodes. The radio show run parallel to the television series up until 1954 when it was finally cancelled.

A Canadian steam ship, the SS Noronic, caught fire in Toronto Harbour, the blaze claimed the lives of more than 110 people.

Greek musician, George Dalaras, was born in Piraeus. He is considered as one of the best contemporary singers of Greek music.
