Actor, Clint Eastwood, was elected mayor of the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. He received 72% of the vote.
1973 
Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, died at the age of 92 in Vauvenargues, southern France.
1968 
American actress, Patricia Arquette, was born in Chicago, Illinois.
1938 
United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan, was born in Kumasi, Ghana.
1911 
American chemist and Nobel Prize winner, Melvin Calvin, was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
1848 
Italian composer, Gaetano Donizetti, died at Bergamo (then Austria). His most celebrated work was the opera "Lucia di Lammermoor".
1820 
The statue of Venus de Milo was discovered by a peasant on the Aegean island of Melos. It is at present on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
1798 
Greek poet, Dionisios Solomos, was born in the island of Zakynthos. The words of the Greek national anthem are based on one of his poems.
1742 
George Frideric Handel's "The Messiah" was performed for the first time in Dublin.
1492 
Lorenzo de Medici, ruler of Florence, died at the age of 43. He was one of the most celebrated rulers of the Italian Renaissance era and the architect of "the Golden Age" of Florence.
