During the 76th Annual Academy Awards the movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, won Oscar for Best Picture, as well as 10 other awards.
2000 
A six year old student in Township, Michigan, USA, shot and killed another student, also six years old, at Theo J. Buell Elementary School. The victim is the youngest ever to die in a school shooting.
1996 
A Peruvian passenger jet crashed in the Andes. All 123 people on board died in the crash.

The siege of the city of Sarajevo came to an end. The siege lasted four years and is the longest siege in modern history.
1960 
A strong earthquake hit Southern Morocco, killing more than 3000 people.
1940 
American actress, Hattie McDaniel, became the first African American to win an Academy Award for her role as Mammy in the classic film, Gone with the Wind.
1940 
The film, Gone with the Wind, was awarded eight Oscars during the 12th Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
1840 
Irish inventor, John Philip Holland, was born in Liscannor. He was the engineer who invented and constructed the first submarine.
1792 
Italian composer, Gioacchino Rossini, was born in Pesaro. He was a popular composer of opera and chamber music. His most known piece of work is the comic opera, The Barber of Seville.
