The music chart's television program, Top of the Pops, was broadcast for the last time on BBC Two. The show first aired in 1962 and was the longest running music related show in the history of television.
2003 
The last 'original style' Volkswagen Beetle was manufactured in Mexico. Volkswagen had introduced the 'new' Beetle in 1998.
1980 
Vanuatu gained its independence. Until its independence the island nation was jointly governed by both England and France.
1966 
The national team of England won the Football World Cup, defeating the team of West Germany with a score of 4-2 in overtime. The series was held in England and the final was played in Wembley Stadium. To this day (2007) it is the only international football title ever to be won my England.

German footballer, Jurgen Klinsmann, was born in Goppingen. He is considered as one of the great German footballers of the late 20th century.
1963 
American actress, Lisa Kudrow, was born in Encino, California. She is best known for her role as Phoebe Buffay in the highly successful television series, Friends.

American basketball player, Chris Mullin, was born in Brooklyn, New York.
1958 
British musician, Kate Bush, was born in Bexleyheath, Kent.
1948 
French actor, Jean Reno, was born in Casablanca, Morocco. He received widespread recognition after his participation in the hit moves, The Big Blue (1988), and Leon (1994) .
1947 
Austrian-born actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was born in Graz, Austria.
1930 
The national football team of Uruguay won the first Football World Cup, defeating Argentina 4 goals to 2. The final was held in the capital city of Uruguay, Montevideo.
1863 
American industrialist, Henry Ford, was born in Detroit. He was the founder of the Ford Motor Company and was one of the pioneers of the concept of automobile mass production.
1729 
The city of Baltimore, Maryland, USA was founded.
1629 
An earthquake in Naples, Italy killed an estimated 10000 people.
