American author, Mario Puzo, died at the age of 79. He is most famous for his work, The Godfather.
1990 
A stampede occurred inside a pedestrian tunnel in the Muslim holy city of Mecca. 1,426 pilgrims died as a result.
1962 
The first Wal-Mart store opened its doors to the public in Rogers, Arkansas. Wal-Mart is one of the largest corporations of the world. As of 2006 it employees approximately 2 million people.
1961 
American writer and Nobel Prize winner, Ernest Hemingway, committed suicide at the age of 62.
1900 
The first ever flight of a zeppelin craft takes place over Lake Constance, Germany.
1853 
The Crimean War began with the invasion of Turkey by forces of the Russian army.
1777 
Vermont became the first American state to abolish slavery.
1566 
French astrologer and prognosticator, Nostradamus, died at the age of 63. It is said that on the day before his death (by an illness which had plagued him for many years) Nostradamus had called his lawyer over to his house, in order to settle the issue of his will.
