This year in history
In the year 1777

	January 16th	Vermont declared its independence. It remained an independent nation until 1791 when it joined the United States as the 14th state.
	June 14th	The Stars and Stripes was adopted as the flag of the United States.
	July 2nd	Vermont became the first American state to abolish slavery.
	October 17th	During the course of the American revolutionary war, American troops defeated the British in the Battle of Saratoga. The battle is considered as having been one of the most critical of the war.
