US President Herbert Hoover signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff into law. By the terms of the tariff, high taxation was imposed on a vast number of imported items, in an effort to stem the effects of the Great Depression within the United States. Due to reactions by several countries, the tariff had the opposite effect and in actuality worsened the situation as exports of US goods fell by almost 50%. |
