American football coach, Tom Landry, died at the age of 75. He is considered as one of the greatest coaches in American football history.
1999 
United States president, Bill Clinton, was acquitted by the United States Senate during his impeachment trial which had been brought forth due to the Lewinski scandal.
1980 
American actress, Christina Ricci, was born in California. Her first appearance in film was alongside Winona Ryder and Cher in the hit movie Mermaids. Her break came when she received the role of Wednesday Addams in the blockbuster, Addams Family, series of films.
1971 
American businessman, James C. Penney, died at the age of 95. He was the founder of the J.C. Penney company, which currently (2006) operates more than 1000 department stores in the United States.
1923 
Italian director, Franco Zeffirelli, was born in Florence. He is most known for his 1977 television mini-series, Jesus of Nazareth, which is still popular today (2006) during the Easter season in many countries.
1912 
The last Emperor of China, Pu Yi, abdicated.
1809 
British naturalist, Charles Darwin, was born in Shropshire, England. He was the author of 'The Origin of Species' and his theory of evolution have granted him a spot among humanity's greatest scientists.
1809 
President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, was born in Kentucky. He is seen by many as one of the greatest presidents in American history. He was the first president to be elected from the Republican Party. He was also the man responsible for ending slavery and the overseer of the Union's war during the American Civil War.
1804 
German philosopher, Immanuel Kant, died at the age of 77. He is widely acknowledged as one of the great philosophers of the modern world and was the last great philosopher of the enlightment period.
1794 
Russian chess master, Alexander Petrov, was born in Biserovo. He is considered as the first Russian chess grandmaster.
1737 
The opera house of San Carlo in Naples, Italy opened for its first performance. It is the oldest surviving opera house in Europe.
1541 
The city of Santiago, capital of Chile, was founded by Pedro de Valdivia. Pedro de Valdivia was Spanish conquistador and the first governor of Chile.
