During the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, two bomb squad technicians were killed while they were disarming two pipe bombs that had been planted in the city.
1974 
A military coup took place in Upper Volta. The country is now known as Burkina Faso, which is a landlocked nation in the western part of the African continent.
1971 
The Nasdaq stock market index was established. It stands for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations.
1970 
American basketball player, Alonzo Mourning, was born in Virginia. He was one of the new stars of the 1990's who was able to make a comeback in the NBA after receiving a kidney transplant, after which he lead the Miami Heat, to win the first championship of his career.
1966 
Bulgarian footballer, Hristo Stoichkov, was born in Plovdiv. He is arguably the most celebrated Bulgarian footballer of the 20th century and was considered as one of the best players in the world.
1962 
Eight people died during a series of riots that took place in Paris, France, in response to France's intention of granting independence to Algeria.
1955 
American writer, John Grisham, was born in Arkansas. He is one of the highest selling novelists of the late 20th and early 21st century.
1925 
American actor, Jack Lemmon, was born in Newton, Massachusetts. He is best remembered for his frequent collaborations with fellow actor and comedian Walter Matthau, the most famous of which was that of the 'Odd Couple'.
1924 
The gas chamber was used for the first time as means of execution in the United States.
1920 
American actress, Lana Turner, was born in Idaho. She was one of the most glamorous actresses of the 1940,s and 1950's.
1587 
Mary, Queen of Scots was beheaded at the age of 46. She had been found guilty of having been part of a plot to murder her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England.
1405 
Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, Constantine XI Palaiologos, was born in Constantinople. He was the last emperor of the Byzantine Empire.
