Pope Paul VI met with Greek patriarch Athenagoras I in Jerusalem. it was the first meeting of Catholic and Orthodox leaders in 525 years.

American actress, Diane Keaton, was born in Los Angeles, California.
1938 
King Juan Carlos I of Spain was born in Rome, Italy. Two days after the death of the dictator, Francisco Franco, Juan Carlos was crowned King of Spain according to the law of succession that had been put into effect by Franco.
1932 
Italian writer, Umberto Eco, was born in Alessandria, Italy. He is best known for his bestselling novel The Name of the Rose.
1931 
Austrian pianist, Alfred Brendel, was born in Wiesenberg, Czechoslovakia. He is considered as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century.
1931 
American choreographer, Alvin Ailey, was born in Rogers, Texas. He was one of the most celebrated modern dance choreographers who founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
1925 
The first female governor was elected in the United States, when Nellie Tayloe Ross was elected as governor of Wyoming.
1740 
Italian composer, Antonio Lotti, died at the age of 77.
