The plane that was carrying the Manchester United FC players and staff crashed in Munich airport as it was attempting to take off. 23 members of the mission died, including eight players.

Egypt and Syria joined to form the United Arab Republic. It only lasted until 1961 when Syria withdrew, although Egypt continued to use the name until 1971.

American actress, Sharon Stone, was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania. She was a largely unsuccessful actress until she got her big break in the movie, Basic Instinct. The role of Catherine Tramell, that made her famous, was offered to 13 women before her.

American actress, Holly Hunter, was born in Georgia, USA. She is most known for her roles in the critically acclaimed film, The Piano, and the blockbuster thriller, The Firm.

American actress, Andie MacDowell, was born in Gaffney, South Carolina. She was a top model before becoming an actress. In her first movie appearance in "Greystoke, The legend of tarzan", her lines were voiced over by actress Glenn Close.

American actress, Michelle Pfeiffer, was born in Santa Ana, California. He career was launched when she took place in the Miss California competition, which she did not win, but instead acquired an agent who helped her secure several television commercial roles.

Velcro's trade mark is registered. It was invented by a Swiss engineer, Georges de Mestral.

American musician, Prince, was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was born, Prince Rogers Nelson, and has been one of the most influential pop musicians of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The Dutch Reformed Church accepted women ministers among its ranks.

Portuguese athlete, Rosa Mota, was born in Porto. She was a marathon runner, one of her country's foremost athletes, who won the gold medal for the marathon run in the 1988 Olympics as well as the bronze in the 1984 Games.

American actor, Kevin Bacon, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His breakthrough role was the 1984 blockbuster movie, Footloose.

In Iraq the monarchy was overthrown by Arab nationalists and Abdul Karim Kassem became the nation's new leader.

The American, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), was established by the Congress of the United States.

British musician, Kate Bush, was born in Bexleyheath, Kent.

American singer, Belinda Carlisle, was born in Hollywood, California. She is most known for having been the lead singer and founding member of the all girl music band, The Go-Go's.

American actress, Madeleine Stowe, was born in Eagle Rock, California. She was an actress for almost 15 years before landing her first leading role in the 1992 hit movie, The Last of the Mohicans.

American actor, Steve Guttenberg, was born in Brooklyn, New York. He starred in some of the highest grossing films of the 1980's and was one of the most famous comedic actors of the time, his career though toned down during the 1990's.

American film director, Tim Burton, was born in Burbank, California. He is considered as one of the most unique directors currently working in Hollywood.

American musician, Michael Jackson, was born in Gary, Indiana. He began his career at the age of seven as the lead singer of 'The Jackson 5' and released his first solo recording, 'Got to Be There' in 1971.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was created in the USA, in essence replacing the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).

American actor, director, and writer, Tim Robbins, was born in California, USA. Along with his long time companion, actress Susan Sarandon, he shares strong liberal political views and has often spoken against globalization and the 2003 US invasion of Iraq.

American actress, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, was born in Illinois. While a highly popular actress in the 1980's, in 1990 she decided to limit her involvement in movies to focus her attention to her family.

American actress, Jamie Lee Curtis, was born in Los Angeles, California.

1st
The Central African Republic became independent from France.
