In the town of Little Rock, the governor of Arkansas, Orville Faubus, called upon the National Guard in an effort to prevent black students from enrolling in Central High School of Little Rock. It is considered as one of the pivotal point of the American Civil Rights Movement.

The NORAD command center (North American Aerospace Defence Command) began operating. It is a joint command of the United States and Canada, residing under Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado, that provides aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America.

Sputnik 1 was launched by the Soviet Union. It was the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth. For many it was the beginning of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union.
