American actor, Scott Glenn, was born in Pennsylvania.

Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney, was born in Nebraska.
February
23th
American chemist, Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, isolated and produced plutonium for the first time.

14th
German film director, Wolfgang Petersen, was born in Emden. He is best known for the World War II classic, Das Boot as well as the more recent movies, In the Line of Fire and Air Force One.
April

The independent state of Croatia was formed by Axis powers, in occupied Yugoslavia.

Japan and the Soviet Union signed a pact of Neutrality.

17th
The Kingdom of Yugoslavia surrendered to Germany, during the course of the 2nd World War.

American actor, Ryan O'Neal, was born in Los Angeles, California.

German troops entered the city of Athens, Greece.

1st
Orson Welles's controversial and highly acclaimed movie, Citizen Kane, premieres in New York City. It is considered one of the most innovative movies ever created and one that is still studied extensively in film schools.

Greek author, Penelope Delta, committed suicide when the Nazi armies entered Athens. She is one of the most celebrated Greek authors of the 20th century.

British anthropologist, Sir James George Frazer, died at the age of 87. He is most known for his publication of 'The Golden Bough', a study of ancient cults, rites, and myths and their relation to Christianity.

20th
The 'Battle of Crete' began as German paratroopers dropped over Crete. It was the first large-scale airborne invasion of the war, although the Germans had used parachute assaults in the invasion of France it was on a much smaller scale. The high cost in German lives during the invasion, put a stop in any further such airborne operation by the Germans throughout the rest of the war.

American musician, Bob Dylan, was born in Duluth, Minnesota. He is one of the most successful musicians of the 20th century and a civil rights activist throughout his life. His birth name was Robert Allen Zimmerman.

The German battleship Bismarck sunk in the North Atlantic Ocean. Over 2,200 of its crew died. The ship was scuttled after it had suffered severe damage by the British ships that had been pursuing it.

30th
Germany captured the island of Crete after what has been historically become known as 'The Battle of Crete'.
June
4th
The last German emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, died at the age of 82 in Doorn, Netherlands. He was forced to abdicate in 1918 and had spent the remainder of his life in exile in the Netherlands.

6th
American automotive pioneer, Louis Chevrolet, died at the age of 62. Born in Switzerland, he emigrated to the United States in 1901 where he worked at various major automobile manufacturers as lead mechanic. He was the founder of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company.

German actor, Jurgen Prochnow, was born in Berlin. He became internationally known after his roles as submarine Captain Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock in Das Boot and Duke Leto Atreides in Dune.

Nazi forces invaded the Soviet Union in accordance with Operation Barbarossa. It is widely regarded as the turning point of World War II.

Lithuania declared its independence from the Soviet Union, however it lasted only a short time as Nazi forces occupied Lithuania a few weeks later.

French and British troops occupied the city of Beirut.

British actor, David Warner, was born in Manchester.
August

During the course of the Second World War the siege of Leningrad began. The siege was lifted on January 27, 1944 after one of the bloodiest sieges in world history.

In Nazi Germany, all Jews over the age of 6 were required to wear the Star of David with the word Jew inscribed on it.

11th
Works commenced on the grounds where the American, Pentagon would be constructed.

16th
The United Kingdom and the USSR occupied Iran and forced, Reza Pahlavi the Shah of Persia, to resign in favour of his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The action had come about due to the fears that Reza Pahlavi was planning to align his country with Nazi Germany during World War II.

American singer and activist, Linda McCartney, was born in New York. Best known for her marriage to Sir Paul McCartney, of The Beatles as well as for being one of the most outspoken Animal rights activist in the world.

27th
The first Liberty Ship, SS Patrick Henry, was launched. The liberty ships were cargo ships built by the United States during World War II. Overall 2,751 Liberty Ships were built with the purpose of transporting supplies from America to England during the war. As of 2006 two of those ships survive as ship museums and are still operational.

13th
American musician, Paul Simon, was born in New Jersey, USA. Along with his high school friend, Art Garfunkel, he formed the Simon & Garfunkel duet which enjoyed tremendous success throughout the 1960's and 1970's. While he subsequently pursued a successful solo career later, he has often reunited with Garfunkel througout the years.

21st
In Kragujevac, Yugoslavia, thousands of civilians, including women and children, were executed by German soldiers as a reprisal for an attack on German soldiers.
December
8th
The United States declared war on Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Additionally China and the Netherlands also declared war on Japan upon the same day.

Russian writer, Dmitry Merezhkovsky, died at the age of 76. He was one of the most prominent figures of the eminent ideologues of Russian Symbolism movement.

During the course of World War II Great Britain declared war on Bulgaria. Hungary and Romania on the United States. And India on Japan.

In the course of World War II the countries of Hungary and Romania declared war on the United States.

23th
American forces were forced to surrender to the Japanese Imperial army in Wake Island.
