American actor, Telly Savalas, was born in New York City. His most famous role was that of the detective Kojak in the television series by the same name.
March
1st
Israeli politician, Yitzhak Rabin, was born in Jerusalem. He was the prime minister of Israel from 1974 until 1977 and again from 1992 till his assassination in 1995. He was assassinated by a right-wing Israeli radical who was opposed to Rabin's signing of the Oslo Accords. He was the both the first prime minister of Israel to have been born in it and the only Israeli prime minister to be assassinated.

In India, Mohandas Gandhi was sentenced to six years in prison for civil disobedience.
April
3rd
Joseph Stalin succeeded Vladimir Lenin in the leadership of the Soviet Union.

British actor, Christopher Lee, was born in Belgravia, London. He became world famous for his portrayal of Count Dracula, opposite his fellow actor and friend Peter Cushing, in numerous productions of the Hammer Horror films studios. In the late 1990's and early 2000's he attained cult status, appearing in some of the most elaborate productions of the last 2 decades, such as the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Star Wars' movies.

American actress, Judy Garland, was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. She was one of the greatest female stars of the golden age of of musical films.

7th
French fashion designer, Pierre Cardin, was born in Venice, Italy.

9th
American swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller, became the first man in history to swim the 100 meters freestyle in under one minute (58.6 seconds).

26th
American film director, Blake Edwards, was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is most known for his producing of the world famous 'Pink Panther' series of movies which starred the late 'Peter Sellers'.
August
2nd
Scottish inventor, Alexander Graham Bell, died at the age of 75. He was one of the foremost pioneers in the development of the telephone.

22nd
Irish revolutionary, Michael Collins, died at the age of 31. He was one of the most important figures in the efforts to create a modern free Ireland. He was shot and killed in August 1922, during the Irish Civil War.
September
9th
The Greek - Turkish war ended with Turkish victory over the Greeks.

The British Mandate of Palestine began. The Mandate of Palestine was a territory in the Middle East including the modern day territories of Israel, Jordan, the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which the League of Nations (predecessor of the United Nations) entrusted the United Kingdom to govern after the end of World War I and the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, as a Mandate Territory.

Egyptian, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, was born in Cairo. He was the sixth UN Secretary-General, and the only one not to be re-elected for a second term in that office. His re-election was vetoed by the United States, supposedly because of a UN report that had been published which criticized Israel's military actions in southern Lebanon.

Archaeologist Howard Carter opened the tomb of the Egyptian Pharao, Tutankhamun.

American writer, Stan Lee, was born in New York City. He is credited with the success of the success of 'Marvel Comics' having created some of the most successful heroes in the comic books world.
