The opera La boheme, by Giacomo Puccini was first performed.

1st
Greek conductor and composer, Dimitri Mitropoulos, was born in Athens. He spent most of his career in the United States, where he was the conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra between the years 1951 and 1957.
March
30th
Greek politician, Harilaos Trikoupis, died in Cannes, France. He was Prime Minister of Greece 7 times, but retired to France after suffering a huge defeat in the elections of 1895.
April
6th
Opening of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens. The games had been banned 1500 years before by the Roman emperor, Theodosius the first.
May
26th
Nicholas the 2nd became Tsar of Russia. He was the last Emperor of Russia, as his rule ended with the Russian Revolution of 1917.
June
2nd
Italian inventor, Guglielmo Marconi, received a patent for the radio.
August
8th
American author, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, was born in Washington, District of Columbia. She is generally regarded as one of the great American writers of the 20th century.
September
24th
American novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald, was born in Minnesota. He is considered as one of the greatest American Novelists of the 20th century, even though he only wrote 4 novels.
November
1st
The first ever picture exposing the naked breasts of a woman appeared in National Geographic magazine.
December
10th
Swedish inventor, Alfred Nobel, died at the age 63. He was the inventor of dynamite and the founder of the Nobel Prizes.
