In the year 1893

	February 23th	The diesel engine was patented by German inventor, Rudolf Diesel.
	March 10th	Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) became a French colony. It remained a colony until its independence in 1960.
	March 18th	Italian cyclist, Costante Girardengo, was born in Novi Ligure. He is considered as one of the greatest athletes to ever grace the sport of cycling.
	June 30th	German politician, Walter Ulbricht, was born in Leipzig. He was one of the most influential politicians of the early years of East Germany and the First Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party from 1950 to 1971.
	August 14th	Motor vehicle registration was implemented for the first time in France.
	November 6th	Russian composer, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, died at the age of 53. He is one of the most popular composers of the Romantic era.
