British writer, J. R. R. Tolkien, was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He is best remembered as the author of the immensely popular books, The Hobbit, and its sequel The Lord of the Rings. The Lord of the rings is one of the most widely read books in human history.

The rules of the sport of basketball were published for the first time by its inventor, James Naismith.

At the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, the first official basketball game is played.

French industrialist, Marcel Dassault, was born in Paris, France. He founded the Dassault aviation company, which is one of Europe's largest aircraft and aviation manufacturers.

The Liverpool football club was founded.

American poet, Walt Whitman, died at the age of 73. He is considered as one of the most prominent figures of American 19th century literature.
April
15th
The General Electric Company was formed. It was created when Edison General Electric Company merged with the Thomson-Houston company. General Electric is considered as one of the ten largest companies in the world.

7th
Yugoslavian politician, Josip Broz Tito, was born in Kumrovec, Croatia (then Austro-Hungarian territory). He was the president of communist Yugoslavia from the end of the Second World War, up until his death in 1980.

4th
The island state of Western Samoa changed the International Date Line, as a result, that year there were 367 days in this country, with two occurrences of Monday, July 4.

Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, was born in Ejersa Goro, Harar. He was one of the most respected monarchs around the world and the 'Messiah' of the Rastafari movement. Under his leadership Ethiopia enjoyed a status of prestige around the world.

British poet, Alfred Lord Tennyson, died at the age of 83. He is considered as one of the most popular English poets of all time.

American actor, Gummo Marx, was born in New York City. He was part of the Marx Brothers group, that marked the stage with its unique comedy style during the first half of the 20th century.

4th
Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco, was born in El Ferrol, Spain. He emerged as Spain's leader after Spanish Civil War and remained its de facto leader until his death. For most his era is considered as a dark chapter of Spanish history, although a few historians credit him with keeping Spain neutral during the Second World War.

American industrialist, J. Paul Getty, was born in Minnesota. He was founder of the Getty Oil Company and one of the richest men in the world.

Tchaikovsky's ballet, The Nutcracker, was performed for the first time at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.
