The Eiffel Tower of Paris, was inaugurated. The tower was the worlds tallest building in the world until 1930 and it was build as the gate for the exhibition that was to mark the centennial celebration of the French Revolution. Construction of the tower took 3 years. |

The Oklahoma land rush took place. Over 50,000 potential settlers were poised on all four borders of the territory. Despite assurances to the contrary by the US Army, most of the land was already marked by settlers who had sneaked in before the opening of the rush. |

British entrepreneur, John Cadbury, died at the age of 88. He was the founder of what is one of the most well known chocolate brands in the world. Although he did own a small chocolate business, it was his sons that expanded the company to the giant that it became in later years. |

88 people were killed near Armagh in Northern Ireland, when the backwards rail cart detached from a train while on an incline and then collided with a following train. It was the worst train dissaster in Europe during the 19th century. |

The financial newspaper, Wall Street Journal, was first published. It is one of the newspapers with the largest circulation in the United States, as well as a strong presence on a global scale. |

English physicist, James Prescott Joule, died at the age of 71. He is credited with discovering the relationship of heat to mechanical work and also worked closely with fellow physicist, Lord Kelvin, to develop the absolute scale of temperature. The joule, which is the unit of energy, is named after him.
