The first ship navigated the Suez Canal.

The first ever performance of Verdi's opera, Don Carlos, took place in Paris.

30th
The territory of Alaska was purchased by the United States from Russia, for 7.2 million dollars. The man mostly responsible for the purchase was the Secretary of State at the time, William Seward. He was greatly criticized for this move at the time, as it was considered a huge purchase of a useless piece of land.
April
1st
Singapore becomes British colony. It became a sovereign nation almost 100 hundred years later.
April
9th
The treaty by which Alaska was purchased by the United States from Russia is ratified in the United States Senate.
June
8th
American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was born in Wisconsin. He is widely acknowledged as the most influential American architect in history.
December
23th
American, Madame C. J. Walker, was born in Louisiana. She was the first person from her family to be born free. She founded a company that created hair tonic which by 1917 was the largest business in the United States owned by an African American. According to the 'Guinness Book of Records' she was the first female American self-made millionaire.
